for us all, written by Norma for July 6, 2008

'nice guys finish first'
and keep their sense of worth
nice guys can reach out far
and still stay down-to-earth
Doug's hard work was gratitude enough
slouching off was not on his routine
one only needed to catch that gaze
and you'd all know what I mean!
he reached out his firm handshake
you returned it: then you found
that his full life became YOUR witness
to his causes: honour bound.
so the legacy he left us: his shoes will be hard to fill
but deep inside, Doug felt the pride
of so many of us returning his own goodwill......the loving wife...

what a tribute again in such apt dramatic fashion, yet fashioned for the simple, honest beginnings and endings of Doug...being married to this train-lover in all its forms, steam engines, freight haulers, double-car containers, he knew them all, and he'll be roaring through crossed treastles every time a faint whisper becomes a roar as it nears us, as we wait and wonder at it's passing.

Peter could not have given me a more wonderful passage, inspired by late thoughts of
Doug knowing he was encompassing us all into his memoirs at the last moment to bear witness to us how to behave without bitterness and to embrace life while on earth to its fullest. I shall replay this for both Peter's sake and
Doug's also...thank you Peter from your mom's heart.

Thanks for the copy of Jack's eulogy, what a nice one it was. Doug sure deserved all those kind and true words. Ray and I thought so much of him. He was a sincere, honest and down-to-earth person... he appreciated so much what anyone did for him - even the smallest act or favour. We will miss him and I know you and your family will miss him immensely. We will make a donation to the Diabetic Fdn. when we go home. We go home in April.

---I will say this - you were both very lucky to have met and spent many fun years together, travelling, golfing, etc. You have many good memories, Norma, again our sincere sympathy. I think you know how we feel and also how helpless we feel down here and not able to be part of the funeral. My first cousin died just a few weeks ago also (Killaloe) - very sudden - 64 years old. Ken McBride and Ray were remisicing yesterday about Doug. (from Florida).

It was with a heavy heart and great sadness that we heard of Doug's death....he was always a delight to converse with, always an interesting tale to tell. Both you and he, Norma, are in our prayers.

tributes far and wide (even few weeks later), but they'll keep coming, one from a lady in Sudbury, who
Doug boarded with: she was left a widow when her husband was shot in a hunting accident...
Aunt Dorothy's tribute is: 'even in sadness, you must feel pride, in the legacy left by someone so special...that spirit will continue to shine lighting the way for others, leaving all of us an example to follow and a remarkable life to remember with grateful hearts...she adds: the words above were meant for Doug...I'm sure he is, and will always be your guardian angel.
...another lady from Kinburn (her son always has been part of the coffee club at the Harbour store):
......we think of you so often, Norma, these days...how busy, how tired, how lonesome you must be...
your happy and cheerful personality has kept you strong during Doug's illness...and surely will help you now: one day at a time..... Ron and Eleanor Wallace

here's the 'old lady' Dixon, re-tracing, re-reading the many true accolades of a life well lived, while well loved by so many, I'm answering one by one personally, helping me reflect on the 'luckiest woman alive' trading his thoughts of me, remembering how it will be easy to recall good days because they all were that with us as a 'couple' .. he's left a legacy that he probably wouldn't have thought possible..it's strange in this day of double-dealing, deceit, and ignoring possibly one's right in front of you, and turning away, that he should be the common-sense man with caring beyond words for one and all of God's children....he'll continue to be my 'trains of thought' and my own 'daily bread....Norma
